The original Kick-Ass was a clever, subversive riff on superhero stories, but the recently released trailer for the upcoming sequel seems to signal the series’ slide into generic action territory despite some offbeat touches.
Director of the original film, Matthew Vaughn, moved on to rebooting the X-Men franchise, handing the Kick-Ass reigns to Jeff Wadlow, best known for his mediocre 2008 action film Never Back Down.
The sequel is still based on source material by the graphic novel’s creator Mark Millar, but from all we see in the trailer it looks like a pretty toothless imitation of the first film.
A saving grace is the presence of Jim Carrey in the nearly unrecognisable role of Colonel Stars And Stripes.
Will that be enough to elevate this from a mere passing entertainment?
Much of the original cast has returned including the trio of three-name wonders: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.
It hits cinemas in June.
