Avatar sequel to feature underwater performance capture

Avatar producer Jon Landau spoke at the 2013 NAB Technology Summit on Cinema to remind people that a sequel to Avatar is indeed in the works, with claims it will revolutionise cinema just as the first one did in 2009.

According to Landau, director James Cameron “will do performance capture in water” this time around, because previously they could only “simulate it visually but [not] simulate it experientially for [actors].”

His comments were captured on Deadline for posterity.

“We want to take advantage of the technologies brilliant people are putting out to make the next two movies even more emotionally engaging and visually tantalizing, and to really wrap up the story arc of our two main characters.”

Those two main characters are Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), just in case you’ve forgotten over the past four years.
