The Great Gatsby breaks Aussie box office record

Baz Luhrmann may be one of Australia’s most divisive filmmakers, but local cinemagoers still flocked to his latest effort.

Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby – set in New York but filmed in Sydney – grossed $6.79 million over the weekend, breaking the record for the biggest opening weekend for an Australian film at the box office.

The previous title holder? Luhrmann’s last flick, Australia, with $6.4 million.

It’s worth noting that, if adjusted for inflation, Australia retains the crown.

The Great Gatsby has so far grossed more than $250 million worldwide off a budget of $105 million.

That figure, however, doesn’t include the tax offset provided by the Australian Government.

Seems Aussie taxpayers were more than happy to pay for the movie twice!
