Trailer Debut: Saving Mr. Banks

The first trailer for Saving Mr. Banks has been released and it looks simply supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Tom Hanks plays the man behind the mouse, Walt Disney, on a mission to fulfil a 20-year-old promise to his daughters: to turn their favourite book, Mary Poppins, into a film.

The only thing standing in his way? The book’s author, P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson), who, wary of the Hollywood system, has long-withheld film rights … until now (only once the book’s sales decline is she ready to negotiate).

The trailer hints at the golden lens of nostalgia the movie has been filmed through, presenting Disneyland in its prime glory. Then there’s Jason Schwartzman and B.J. Novak as the Sherman brothers, who penned many a memorable tune for Disney, providing some comic relief as they pitch their tunes to Travers (not a fan of made-up words, apparently).

The trailer also delves into Travers’ personal history as it’s revealed that her father inspired her to write Mary Poppins and that Mary Poppins arrived not to save the children but the family’s patriarch, Mr. Banks.

Saving Mr. Banks, directed by John Lee Hancock, hits cinemas February 2014.
