Despite the Australian government’s efforts to entice Disney to our shores with a healthy tax rebate, David Fincher’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is dead in the water, Indiewire reports.

The pricey adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic book was reportedly killed on account of the Mouse House’s recent run of big-budget box office failures (John Carter, The Lone Ranger).

Sources close to the project tell Indiewire that it died months ago, coinciding with Fincher moving on to an adaptation of Gone Girl.

Good news for those hoping he’d get back to work on the Dragon Tattoo franchise. With 20,000 Leagues no longer an obstacle, he could return to the Stieg Larsson franchise after Gone Girl wraps.

Screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker (Se7en) was recently hired by Sony to begin work on the script for The Girl Who Played With Fire.
