James Cameron confirms three Avatar sequels in the works

Avatar becomes highest grossing film of all time

Well! We’re yet to see even one sequel to James Cameron’s record-breaking blockbuster Avatar, but here he goes promising three full follow-ups.

Cameron and 20th Century Fox announced their intentions yesterday, following the leaked hiring of screenwriters Josh Friedman, Shane Salerno, and the team of Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver to help pen the scripts.

All three sequels will be filmed back-to-back, beginning in 2014.

Avatar 2 will hit cinemas December 2016. Avatar 3 will arrive one year later, in December of 2017. You guessed it, Avatar 4 lands December 2018, almost ten years after the first flick collected $2.78 billion at the box office.

All other details are tightly under wraps, though Cameron has suggested in the past that one of the “sequels” would actually be a “prequel” to the events of the first Avatar.
