Peter Capaldi is the new Doctor Who

Actor Peter Capaldi arrives at the BAFTA awards ceremony in London

Peter Capaldi, the Scottish actor best known for playing foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It, will soon take on the role of another, even more iconic doctor.

The BBC announced this morning Capaldi’s casting as the twelfth incarnation of the titular Time Lord in Doctor Who, following weeks of rumour and innuendo. He takes over from outgoing doctor Matt Smith, and will be joined by Smith’s current companion, Jenna-Louise Coleman, on his first adventures.

Show-runner Steven Moffat echoed fans’ excitement by saying this in the official press release: “Peter Capaldi is in the TARDIS!”

Capaldi previously appeared as Caecilius in the 2008 episode The Fires of Pompeii.

He is also an Oscar winner, having picked up the Best Short Film (Live Action) accolade in 2005 for his film Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life.

Capaldi was last seen in World War Z, playing a W.H.O. Doctor. Seriously.

As for Smith, he will make his exit in a 50th anniversary show scheduled to air on November 23.

As Tucker would say, “F***ity bye.”
