Trailer Debut: Unforgiven (Japanese Remake)

Unforgiven

The Japanese remake of Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven now has a trailer, and it should entice those who were previously sceptical of the project.

Directed by Sang-il Lee, it transports the American Western to Meiji era Japan, and recasts Ken Watanabe in the Clint Eastwood role.

In it, Watanabe plays a notorious killer reluctantly dragged back into his grisly trade, and eventually set on a course of revenge.

Eastwood’s Unforgiven took the Best Picture and Best Director prizes at the 1993 Academy Awards (only the third Western to do so).

The source material is indeed rich, but that also means the bar is pretty high for Lee. I’ll be intrigued to see how he attempts to differentiate his tale further.

Though, this is an interesting inversion of the way remakes usually are made (Seven Samurai was turned into The Magnificent Seven; Yojimbo became A Fistful of Dollars).

Unforgiven – Yurusarezaru mono – opens in Japan September 13. Look for it in local cinemas in 2014.
