Following the monumental flopping of his passion project, After Earth, Will Smith is suddenly interested in maybe coming back for that Independence Day sequel.
Director Roland Emmerich, speaking to Digital Spy, confirmed that he and Smith will soon meet to discuss the project, despite Smith having previously shunned the prospect of a sequel.
Emmerich had originally claimed Smith was too expensive for the ID4 follow-up anyway.
Well, considering Smith’s most recent big screen effort didn’t even crack the magic $100 mark in the United States, his quote might soon become a little more manageable.
Smith had told Digital Spy on the After Earth promo trail that he was eager to abandon blockbusters, and instead planned on “finding more danger in my artistic choices.”
But that was prior to Smith getting the first major ding in his bankability armour. He will likely want (nay, need) to re-establish his money-making credentials before attempting anything particularly adventurous.
Independence Day 2 is set for release July 2015.
