Who would have thought that of 2013’s two competing ‘White House invasion’ movies, the one starring Gerard Butler would trounce Channing Tatum’s at the box office?
Well, that’s precisely what happened, with Antoine Fuqua’s Olympus Has Fallen grossing almost $100 million in the U.S.
Roland Emmerich’s White House Down‘s only collected $73 million off a $150 million budget.
(WHD grossed more worldwide, but only just, and considering its plum mid-year release date and higher cost, it was expected to do far better than it actually did.)
Screen Daily now reports that Nu Image and Millennium Films are producing and financing a sequel to Fuqua’s surprise hit, entitled London Has Fallen.
Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, and Radha Mitchell will all reprise their roles from the original.
The picture will concern Butler’s secret service agent foiling a terrorist plot during the British Prime Minister’s funeral.
Shooting begins May 2014.
