Trailer Debut: The Lego Movie

The Lego Movie

The trailer for next year’s The Lego Movie hit the streets recently, and while the cynic in me wants to wince at what is the zenith of merchandising and film’s uncomfortably close relationship, it is hard to resist the undeniable charm of the concept.

Parks And Recreation‘s Chris Pratt voices the lovably naïve central character in what looks to be a pretty rote “you are the chosen one” narrative (seemingly dubbed “the special” here).

Cheesy jokes come thick and fast but somehow they land more often than not, probably due to the wonderfully tactile, handmade quality of the animation.

With input from Chris McKay, creator of Robot Chicken and a score by Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh, this is one of the most promising kids’ films of 2014.

And all inspired by a blocky toy line…

The Lego Movie is directed by Chris Miller and Phil Lord, and also features the voices of Elizabeth Banks, Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson, and Morgan Freeman.
