Masturbation or sex? James McAvoy reveals what’s harder to shoot

Filth

James McAvoy believes pretending to masturbate is easier than shooting sex scenes.

We caught up with McAvoy ahead of the release of his new movie Filth, based on Irvine Welsh’s controversial novel of the same name.

In it, he plays a sex-mad detective who gets his rocks off in all kinds of unsavoury ways.

When asked which sexual act was easier to film, the answer came quickly.

“Masturbation is much easier, of course, because there’s nobody else there that you’re worried about.

“You’re not worried about the actress or the actor feeling uncomfortable or taken advantage of or anything like that,” he said.

“But the sex scenes in this weren’t too hard, actually,” McAvoy added, no pun intended.

“I think the nature of them made them a little more fun and easy to shoot, because you both have to go 150 per cent.

“No pillow talk or gently caressing each other; [more] tying a rope around your neck.”
