The Top 10 Male Performances of 2013

Top 10 Male Performances of 2013

Spoiler alert: James Franco will top this list. Question is, for what? The divisive overachiever appeared in – and I am not sh***ing you – at least 13 movies this past year, not including his stint on The Mindy Project, his Comedy Central Roast, and that Kanye West spoof Bound 3. He also directed a bunch of stuff, including an adaptation of his own book, Palo Alto, and a documentary that sought to restage the explicit sex scenes from William Friedkin‘s derided Cruising. Some of these projects were good, and many of them were god-awful. Only one thing, however, puts him in the history books, and you’ll find it in first place on this chart of 2013’s best male performances. He’s joined by many fine thesps, including familiar – if revitalised – faces, such as Ethan Hawke, Tom Hanks, Matthew McConaughey, Robert Redford, and Michael Douglas. Perhaps that’s the theme of this list: stars emerging from their respective ruts with ambitious, unique, and risky roles. It’s the only move from Franco’s playbook we’d ever advise an actor to take.
