‘Star Trek 3’ gets a new, non-J.J. Abrams director

Star Trek

After months of rumours and flirtatious glances, Paramount and Skydance have locked down Roberto Orci as director of Star Trek 3, Variety reports.

Better known for his partnership with screenwriter Alex Kurtzman (the two penned both Star Trek reboots, Cowboys & Aliens, and the first two Transformers movies), this will mark Orci’s directorial debut.

The duo recently parted ways to embark on solo projects.

Orci, who had been campaigning heavily for the gig, will take over from outgoing helmer J.J. Abrams (he’s now busy with that other Star thing).

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are working on the script, with an assist from Orci.

Star Trek 3 does not yet have a release date, but is expected to drop in 2016.
