Following Godzilla‘s massive weekend at the box office, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have revealed they’re hard at work developing a sequel. Deadline has the Exclusive.
Though this is hardly a surprise for a big budget blockbuster – especially one based on a long-running franchise like this – but had Gareth Edwards’ monster movie underperformed, any talk of a follow-up would have been immediately quashed.
After all, that’s precisely what happened to the mooted sequels to Roland Emmerich’s 1998 disaster after it opened to an underwhelming $44 million.
Few details are known about Godzilla 2, such as if the (surviving) castmembers would even return.
Godzilla earned $93 million in North America in its first frame, the second biggest bow of 2014. (It was $2 million shy of Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s debut, and a few million greater than The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s opening weekend).
Combined with its $103 million internationally tally, the flick is sitting pretty at nearly $200 million worldwide after just a handful of days in cinemas.
