It’s a good month to be Gareth Edwards.

The director has a massive hit on his hands with Godzilla, which has already grossed more than $200 million worldwide, and if that wasn’t enough, Disney and Lucasfilm have just announced him as the helmer of their first standalone Star Wars flick.

According to THR, his spin-off will hit cinemas December 16, 2016, almost exactly a year after J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars Episode VII arrives on screens.

It’s unknown which character from the Star Wars canon will be central to the film. though rumours have suggested Boba Fett and Yoda will be first to get their own movies.

Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) will script the feature. Have a listen to him tear into Disney’s Jedi Training Academy here (language warning).

This pretty much means Edwards won’t be back to helm the newly announced Godzilla 2. Who would have thought that someone could graduate from Godzilla to literally bigger (though it’s too early to say ‘better’) things.

And here’s another reminder to watch his first movie, Monsters. It’s great.
