Magic Mike was instrumental in salvaging the wreckage of Matthew McConaughey’s career, but now that he’s got his Oscar (and soon, probably an Emmy, thanks to True Detective), will he take his victory lap and reprise the role of singing stripper Dallas in the sequel?
The comedian who played DJ Tobias in the first Steven Soderbergh flick, Gabriel Iglesias, revealed to Dish Nation it’s unlikely.
“Word has it that Matt’s probably not gonna be involved, because he’s worth a lot of money now – that whole Oscar thing.”
Channing Tatum, who has co-written the script with producer Reid Carolin, previously said everyone would be back for the sequel, and early reports suggested Dallas would at least be featured briefly in the film.
Perhaps that’s no longer the case. At least we know for sure Iglesias is “signed on” for the second instalment. That’s almost as good as having McConaughey back, right?
Steven Soderbergh’s longtime AD Greg Jacobs will direct Magic Mike XXL, while the “retired” Soderbergh will return as camera operator, director of photography, and editor.
