American Film Institute name top 10 films of 2009

Can two animated films (Up, Coraline), two little seen indies (The Messenger, Sugar) and one balls-out comedy hit (The Hangover) become genuine Oscar contenders like Up In The Air, Precious or The Hurt Locker? The American Film Institute believes so! They each garner a mention in their top 10 films of 2009.

The full list is as follows:

In other awards news, The Hurt Locker was named the Best Film of 2009 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the Boston Society of Film Critics. Meanwhile, the New York Film Critics Online gave their top prize to Avatar.

Discuss: We’ve been debating the implications of the Academy’s decision to expand their Best Picture category to 10 nominations. Will we see blockbusters, deserving indie films or middle of the road pap fill these extra slots?
