Brittany Murphy has died of a heart attack at her home in Los Angeles. She was 32 years old.

An emergency call was placed by her husband at 8am Sunday morning when Murphy’s mother had found the actress unconscious in the shower. Paramedics attempted to revive her at the scene. She was later pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai medical center.

Murphy first emerged on the film scene with a breakout role as the unfashionable Tai in 1995’s Clueless.

She became one of Hollywood’s hardest working actresses over the next decade, appearing in supporting roles in films such as Girl Interrupted, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Don’t Say A Word and Riding in Cars with Boys.

Murphy soon achieved leading status by appearing in the hit movies 8 Mile, Just Married and Sin City.

In the past few years she had consistently turned in some excellent vocal work, particularly as Luanne in the TV show King of the Hill, as well as in the animated film Happy Feet.

Murphy had appeared in three films that are still awaiting release.

She is survived by her husband Simon Monjack.

Discuss: What are your favourite memories of Brittany Murphy’s career? Personally, I found her performance in Girl Interrupted to be incredibly powerful.
