Alexander Payne eyes Bruce Dern and Will Forte for Nebraska

Fresh from his Oscar-winning hit The DescendantsAlexander Payne is putting together the cast for his follow up, Nebraska.

According to Deadline, Payne wants Bruce Dern and Will Forte (Saturday Night Live) to star as father and son in the black and white road movie.

Budgeted at a measly $13 million, the script comes from Bob Nelson. It tells of an alcoholic old man who receives a sweepstakes letter and believes it to be the real deal; he recruits his underachieving son for the drive to their headquarters where he would presumably claim his cash.

Payne originally wanted Gene Hackman to come out of retirement for the part of the father, but he was unwilling.

Hopefully this winds up being a break-out role for Forte, who hasn’t had much of a showcase since leaving SNL a couple years ago.
