Melbourne International Film Festival unveil 2012 program

The Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) recently unveiled their complete program and boy is it a doozy. Spanning 17 days in August and featuring over 300 feature films, MIFF is Australia’s largest and oldest film festival.

On top of their earlier – First Glimpse and Cannes – announcements, the program is packed with exciting events from the opening night Australian premiere of musical The Sapphires to the closing night premiere of P.J. Hogan‘s (Muriel’s Wedding) latest, Mental, which stars Toni Collette and Anthony LaPaglia. Other anticipated Australian features include Save Your Legs, a Bollywood cricket comedy with Stephen Curry and Brendan Cowell, and 100 Bloody Acres, a local horror pic with Angus Sampson.

American film-maker and comic Bobcat Goldthwait will be a guest of the festival presenting his latest black comedy, God Bless America, while Benh Zeitlin, director of what looks to be the best film of 2012, Beasts Of The Southern Wild, is also visiting.

As well as some clever program strands exploring everything from new Swedish cinema to Hollywood comedy of the 70s, we have highlights such as skateboard documentary This Ain’t California, hip-hop doco Something From Nothing – The Art Of Rap, gonzo practical joke The Ambassador, Swedish comedy Flicker, horror anthology V/H/S, and French thriller Sleepless Night.

MIFF runs August 2 to 19, 2012. Full program at here.
