Top 10 Australian Films of 2013

December: for avid list-makers, it’s the cinematic equivalent of Thunderdome. (Hundreds of movies go in. Only one comes out.) We’ve spent the past eleven months reviewing 2013’s releases as fairly and thoughtfully as possible, but that veneer of considerate criticism will be dropped in favour of sweet, sweet chart-making.

The next few weeks will be spent forcing all those movies to compete for our affection in a series of gruelling grudge matches, ultimately leading to us crowning victors in a variety of different categories. This month-long battle royale will conclude with the selection of a Best Film, and, as is tradition, a Worst Film too. Let the arbitrary rankings begin!

The recurring joke, when we publish our annual Top 10 Australian Films list, is this: “There were ten good Australian films?” Yes, dammit! Well… definitely eight. Though the local industry churned out its fair share of clunkers – culture-cringe musical Goddess and mama-drama Adoration chief among them – there were, as always, plenty of impressive features to restore faith in our cinematic output. It’s true that some underwhelming entries inevitably crack the top ten (simply because of the small number that ever enjoy a wide-ish release), but the majority of this list represents the best Australian filmmaking has to offer.
