Spider-Man to snare Wasikowska and Stone in web of love?

Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) and Emma Stone (Easy A) are reportedly in talks to star as Spider-Man’s love interests in the upcoming reboot of the Marvel superhero saga.

Last month, we reported that Sony had been searching far and wide for a female lead to play opposite their new Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield). Actresses such as Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Teresa Palmer read for the role, which at the time was merely called ‘Girl’ (Palmer briefly discussed her audition with us in a recent interview).

According to EW, there is not one but two major female roles up for grabs (most likely Spider-Man’s great loves: Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy), and Stone and Wasikowska look like the lead contenders.

Both Stone and Wasikowska (likely contenders for Mary Jane and Gwen respectively) have met with Garfield and director Marc Webb in the past few weeks.

Stone is a likely choice for Sony, who has already starred in four of their features (Superbad, The House Bunny, Zombieland, Easy A). She proved that she could open a movie last week when the US$8 million-budgeted Easy A opened to US$18 million in the United States.

Although Wasikowska is the face of the billion-dollar grossing Alice in Wonderland, there is a distinct possibility that she’ll shy away from another studio film, and instead favour more independent fare.

More news as it develops.

Spider-Man begins shooting later this year, for a May 2012 debut.

Discuss: Would you like to see Stone and Wasikowska enter the realm of the comic book movie?
