First look at Sherlock Holmes 2

What do you do when your Sherlock Holmes reboot is a smashing success? It’s elementary my dear Watson – you make a sequel. The first official image for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes second jaunt, currently untitled, has been released and it’s, well, a bit of a mystery.

Reprising their roles as Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson are Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, seen here with Noomi Rapace in her first American studio role. Rapace is best known for playing Lisbeth Salander in the Millennium trilogy (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo); in Sherlock 2 she’ll be tackling the role of a French gypsy that Holmes and Watson encounter. Rapace looks set to replace the female lead played in the first film by Rachel McAdams.

What this image doesn’t show is perhaps the most exciting part of the upcoming sequel; Stephen Fry as Mycroft Holmes, older brother to Sherlock, and Jared Harris (Mad Men) as Sherlock’s arch nemesis Professor Moriarty.

The few photos from the set, which have been circulating since October, are far more interesting than this staged picture. It tells us nothing about the film, though perhaps that is the idea, and shows the three characters in conflicting positions. Jude Law is quite animated while Noomi Rapace seems motionless and Robert Downey Jr. looks like he’s just stuck his finger in an electrical socket.

The image is simply not inspiring and one can only hope more enticing photos are released as the film’s December 2011 release gets closer.

  1. >I love the photo. Downey's look, Noomi's stone-hard expresson, and Jude's helplessness. It's offbeat. I just hope the sequel will actually have a mystery to solve. The Scooby-Doo movie was more mysterious than Sherlock Holmes -_-
