Vaughn to recruit Eastwood, Nicholson and Beatty as old superheroes?

Adjust your spectacles, adhere those dentures and ready your walking frames. Writer/director/producer Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class) has the elderly in his sights.

Vaughn has told Deadline London that a major Hollywood studio has shown interest in his next project, The Golden Age, about a retirement home for old superheroes. Based on an unpublished comic book by British TV host Jonathan Ross, the retired superheroes will again come to the aid of mankind and help their grandchildren after their parents basically “screw up the world”.

Vaughn professed he would like to get names attached to the project before moving forward. So who does Vaughn envision taking a room in the home? Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson and Warren Beatty all top his list, and with the success of recent elderly action films, The Expendables and RED, Vaughn thinks The Golden Age could be a hit. He said:

“You have these great star names and they’re mainly playing supporting roles now. I want to give them the lead again and let them have some fun.”

Retired superheroes are not a new trend however, with a 55-year-old Bruce Wayne making an appearance in the legendary 1986 Frank Miller comic The Dark Knight Returns, and Kurt Buseik’s Astro City comic, about a city of retired heroes, in development for the big screen.

Personally I don’t see the attraction – or the comedy – in pensioners in tights and capes but with Vaughn at the helm this could be interesting.

Vaughn’s writing partner Jane Goldman (and Ross’ wife), who co-wrote both Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class, has not been confirmed to write his latest. Vaughn himself admits he may not even direct, choosing instead to return to producing, as he did on Guy Ritchie’s early films.

Discuss: Does The Golden Age interest you or would you rather see The Golden Girls: The Movie?

  1. >Please don’t joke about the prospect of a Golden Girls movie. As for the worthiness of The Golden Age… it sounds dangerously close to Kick-Ass with old people. There are few comic devices less funny than old people swearing, so let’s hope Vaughn is not planning on using that device to get laughs in The Golden Age.

  2. >I don't mind the idea of elderly superheros/action stars. I think the problem with RED was that them being old was kind of the joke of the movie. But I think WATCHMEN did a good job of depicting older suprerheroes struggling with coming out of retirement
