Iranian actress sentenced to 90 lashes and jail time

In a ruling that has shocked the film world, Iranian actress Marzieh Vafamehr has been sentenced to 90 lashes and one year in jail for her role in the Australian-produced film My Tehran For Sale.

Filmed in the Iranian Capital, Vafamehr plays an actress whose stage work is banned by authorities. Though the film itself is banned in Iran, it is thought that black market distribution and particular scenes where Vafamehr appears without her hijab (traditional Muslim head covering) have led to this sentence.

The filmmakers released a statement saying, “Adelaide-based company Cyan Films worked with an established Iranian production company to produce the film and all proper government permits were obtained for filming. The producers would like to emphasise that Marzieh’s involvement in the film was limited to her role as an actress and she was not in any other way involved in the behind-the-scenes filmmaking.”

My Tehran For Sale director Granaz Moussavi has described the sentence as “unexpected, unconventional and unjust”.

Vafamehr is currently seeking an appeal to the sentence.

Discuss: Should the Australian government voice their opposition?

  1. Yeah; why not have the AUGOV voice an objection. That’d really put the sh*ts up Iran

  2. or they could elevate that to “strong objection” which would surely have Iran quaking in their boots !! Bloody pathetic when ‘religion’ gets involved in common law and stuffs up the pursuit of a normal life ( yet again ! )

  3. How can you reason with a country that sentences a woman to 90 lashes and a year in jail for not wearing a scarf on her head, but praises suicide bombers as heroes? It’s like being stuck in an episode of the Twilight Zone!
