Trailer Debut: Cowboys and Aliens

The teaser trailer for Jon Favreau‘s upcoming comic-book adaptation Cowboys and Aliens, starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford (as cowboys, presumably) has debuted online.

Craig stars as a gunslinger with no memory of his past. Armed with a mysterious device on his wrist, he wanders into the desert town of Absolution … just before it is attacked by mysterious intergalactic enemies.

The tone of the trailer is much darker than I had anticipated (I was expecting a fun romp a’la Favreau’s Iron Man). It actually reminds me of the teaser for Transformers (also exec produced by Steven Spielberg). That shouldn’t be read as a negative. Although the second Transformers film is almost ridiculously terrible, I felt the first film adequately captured the spectacle of giant robot alien invaders tearing up planet Earth. Hopefully the scale of Cowboys and Aliens will be similarly ginormous.

Cowboys and Aliens is based on the comic of the same name by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley (you can read the prologue here). The script was first written by Iron Man screenwriters Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus. Star Trek writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman took a second pass at it, as well as Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof. Actually, saying that, we’re not really sure who wrote this thing. Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer will produce.

The film also stars Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell and Paul Dano. It hits cinemas July 2011.
